Needless to say, I have quite a bit of downtime during the day when I'm in-between projects. Before tackling the book club list that ML so kindly wrote out, I decided to look back on my bookshelves at all of the required reading I had during my high school summers. I've read a LOT of Steinbeck, and not with very fond memories I must say. But reading his "Travels with Charley" has made me appreciate his prose so much more. This book is Steinbeck's recollection of taking a cross-country tour for 3 months around America in a trailer with his old French poodle. No one knew who he was the entire time, and he traveled along the back roads of the country meeting truckers and friendly strangers. I think it helps that I am reading for pleasure and at my leisure now, rather than trying to retain as much information and speed through it as quickly as possible before a pop quiz. Anyway, here's one paragraph about turkeys that just sums up his entertaining writing style:
"To know them is not to admire them, for they are vain and hysterical. They gather in vulnerable groups and then panic at rumors. They are subject to the sicknesses of other fowl, together with some they have invented. Turkeys seem to be manic-depressive types, gobbling with blushing wattles, spread tails, and scraping wings in amorous bravado at one moment and huddled in craven cowardice the next. It is hard to see how they can be related to their wild, clever, suspicious cousins. But here in their thousands they carpeted the earth waiting to lie on their backs on the platters of America."
Maybe I'm a geek to admire how beautifully he constructed that paragraph. But man! What a good writer!

An update
Because of ML's constant NAGGING, I'm updating my blog. But because I'm so lazy, I'm actually just copying and pasting an email I just wrote to a friend today. Here it is, with some minor editing:
"Everything's great over here. I'm staying busy with my freelance graphic design. I actually got the bid from a non-profit org to design a billboard that will be all around H-town. It's to promote awareness about human trafficking in the United States. I'm not getting paid much, but how could I turn down the job? I'm also entering a contest to design the logo for the new Catholic cathedral that's being built in downtown.
The t-shirt biz will start to pick up soon, hopefully. I've been busy designing 5 new shirts that we're planning to launch on July 7th (7/7/07). We're going to several conferences later this year as an exhibitor, so I'm crossing my fingers that those shows generate more income and buzz. Our goal for next year is to start putting our shirts in Christian college bookstores and other small retail spaces. We'll see!
I've started going to a place called St. M's, but haven't found my niche yet. Have not volunteered with their Youth Ministry yet. Went to a Young Adults dinner but wasn't very impressed. Just found out about a Bible study for 20s and 30s, so I
think I might join that. I also found out that my former high school voice coach is the choir director at St. M's, so I've joined the choir! This coming Sunday will be my first time singing with them, so we'll see how it goes."
In other gossip-y news, I've been on eHarm with some interesting results. Some of the guys seem cool but are awful communicators and take weeks to respond. I was getting along with one very cute guy and was emailing back and forth every day, then Poof! he vanished. I tried emailing him (twice) to no avail, so I "Close Match"ed his ass. I don't have the time or patience to play games. Then I've gotten some other really odd profiles. One guy was looking for a girl with blue eyes because he has blue eyes and wanted to pass down the blue eye genes to his offspring. And yet he wanted to communicate with me....? I also got another guy who's answer for every other question was along the lines of "to look at your beautiful black hair." Creepy!!! And the most recent oddball was a 37 yr old 5'4" chinese guy who wanted to live the life of a shogun and expected his wife to be pure and a virgin and obedient. Yeah.........I actually AM still a big V and am not ashamed of it, but to make that a requirement? No thanks.
So that's all the wild and exciting news in the world of KQ! I know I should post more frequently and now with all my free time I should. I just wish ML would get off my case sometimes. We can't ALL be as perfect and funny and interesting as her. ;P And I say that as I now post this and head over to her blog to catch up on weeks' worth of juicy information......
